Mock Draft #3 - Pre-Combine

Finally. It finally feels like draft time. The SuperBowl has come and gone. What a game it was. The first half and really into the second were forgettable. Some moments to remember though include the emergence of the former Blue Hen of Delaware, Joe Flacco. The SuperBowl MVP played at an incredibly high level throughout the playoffs and warrants a nice new contract from the Ravens. He has been to the playoffs for five straight years and has won nine games and a SuperBowl. He doesn't always have the flash and fire many like to see from QBs, but Mr. Flacco certainly gets it done. Second thing to remember from the first half and into the second was Jacoby Jones and the history he made. His receiving TD followed up by the second half opening kick back 108yds really gave the Ravens all the "power" they needed. Speaking of power, who will ever forget the 34 minute delay caused by the power outage. The twitterverse blew up on that and I loved it. After that was over, the 49ers came out seemingly "recharged" (so many puns to choose from) and made a game of it. I was so ready to trademark "LightGate" had they finished the comeback. I don't like the play calling at the end for the 49ers but you live and learn. Little brother Jim has a lot to learn about class and losing with dignity too. So with that, the 2012 NFL Season is over and we open the book on the 2013 Season.

Now the entire NFL world's focus will be on this week's Combine in Indianapolis. The top draft eligible prospects will be on hand and scouts will get a chance to see what these athletes can do wearing shorts. While I believe the Combine is necessary, in my opinion, it means close to nothing. A player can certainly improve their stock with a great performance but if I were a coach or GM, I would want to know how they perform on Sundays. Between the ears is where it all matters this week. Pro days and private or individual workouts are also on the way , but my draft fix is finally here and I love every minute of it. Until free agency hits, this is where the NFL focus is. 

Before I get into the mock, I wanted to share my opinion on the Ray Lewis deer antler controversy. First of all, deer antler? Really? Second, lets not be shocked that an NFL player might have taken an illegal substance. Have you seen some of them lately? Sure I understand that they hit the gym everyday, eat right, and have a team of training experts in their ear, but what really goes on behind closed doors? Now, I'm not accusing Lewis of taking? using? deer antler (still can't get over saying deer antler as an illegal drug) but what I am saying is I would not be surprised. I honestly believe the majority of NFL players are taking something illegal but either know how to get around it or are told to stop and if they get caught again, will be suspended (which they can appeal anyways and usually win. Imagine if real life worked like that.) So yeah, like I said, not accusing, just having an open mind that not every NFL superstar is clean.

This third mock draft will feature the start of the third round ending with the Buffalo Bills pick. I elected not to get into trades just yet because I want to see how free agency pans out. Oh, and as far as no QBs in round 1 in my last mock, that has changed. Kansas City, you are on the clock...(no, Leon Sandcastle is not my first pick)

     

1.) Kansas City Chiefs: Luke Joeckel OT/Texas A&M  Again, as of now before the combine, this pick does not change. This is really the first time in a awhile I can remember there not being a clear cut favorite to be picked first overall. A good showing in Indy could only help Joeckel solidify that status. But there is the prospect of Geno Smith or another QB showing well and earning that distinction as well.
 
2.) Jacksonville Jaguars: Damontre Moore DE/Texas A&M  It is a tight race between Moore and Werner I believe to be the second overall selection. In this heat, Moore takes it. Not saying Werner isn't worthy, but I watched some highlights and saw a little more power and explosion in Moore than in Werner. It really is like comparing whether or not a paper dollar is better than four quarters. Essentially the same player.

3.) Oakland Raiders: Dee Milliner CB/Alabama  The more I thought about it, the Raiders have a greater need in their secondary more than anywhere else. Milliner is not the best shut down guy out there, but he is certainly an upgrade than what the silver and black have now. They need to build this team up at every position possible so when Carson Palmer leaves, a young QB can fit in easily.

4.) Philadelphia Eagles: Geno Smith QB/West Virginia  Like I said in my intro, QBs are back in the first round. Why Geno here at number four to Philly? Chip Kelly. Looking back at his time at Oregon, every QB he had could run and pass on a frequent basis and at a high level. Smith is the only true dual threat QB in this class. Michael Vick could very well stay one more season to groom Smith, but this will be Kelly's guy for his offense.

5.) Detroit Lions: Bjoern Werner DE/Florida State  This is where the German product lands in mock three. Again, scouts will learn a lot from the combine about both Werner and D. Moore but watching the film will be a more effective tool than anything else. Werner is no doubt a top five talent and will get drafted one way or another in the top five.

6.) Cleveland Browns: Star Lotulelei DT/Utah  The Browns still have a need, in my opinion, at every position. Including QB. But for now, I believe they stick with Weeden and address the defensive side of the ball. The big man from Utah did not get the National attention he warranted with his play this season. This team needs a plug in the middle. Now third year man Phil Taylor has not lived up to his first round pick status just yet.

7.) Arizona Cardinals: Tyler Wilson QB/Arkansas  I think this pick will influence what the Bills do at number eight. Wilson showed the most promise out of the six QBs at the Senior Bowl. He wasn't great by any stretch. He has a good arm and is mobile. The Cardinals need an upgrade over the revolving door of Kevin Kolb and John Skelton.




Barkevious Mingo



8.) Buffalo Bills: Barkevious Mingo DE/OLB/LSU  The hybrid player fits into the hybrid defense new DC Mike Pettine will run. I know I was on a WR kick early on in this process but the more I thought about it, they have a much bigger need at LB. I debated Jarvis Jones for this spot but went back and read another article citing his back and neck problems. He ultimately could wind up like Da'Quan Bowers a couple years ago. As far as Mingo goes, he has the talent to be elite in the NFL. With proper coaching and fitting into the right scheme, I think he will be a major asset to the Bills defense. I think Wilson was their guy to target in round one.

9.) New York Jets: Eric Fisher OT/Central Michigan  Not the sexy pick for the Jets but they need some serious help on the O-Line. Sanchez was under constant pressure last season and the run game was virtually ineffective. Fisher is a true football player. Everything the Experts say football players need, he has. Size, toughness, a mean streak are all things Fisher has and could bring the ground and pound back to the Jets.

10.) Tennessee Titans: Chance Warmack G/Alabama  The Titans were in the same boat as the Jets last season. They simply could not keep their QBs upright. CJ2K had a few good games (I feel like most of his yards came on the 83 yd TD run against the Bills) but not enough to call him elite. Anyone who watched the National Championship saw Warmack's big gut but more importantly his ability to man handle his opposition. This would be a great player Mike Munchak would love to coach being an O-Lineman himself.

11.) San Diego Chargers: Cordarrelle Patterson WR/Tennessee  Seemingly now the top wideout in the draft, Patterson has the skills necessary to be a dominant NFL receiver. His rare combination of talent makes him so desirable around the NFL. Very fast, big, and hands make him a strong candidate to be the first WR taken. Watch a team trade up for this player but for now, I can see him in the powder blues.

12.) Miami Dolphins: Jarvis Jones OLB/Georgia  Truly a top five talent slips out of the top ten due to injury concerns. I said it before that he may end up like Da'Quan Bowers but I don't see this player lasting past pick fifteen. He is just too talented and if the Dolphins have him land in their lap, I can see the time next to their name be gone in an instant. He would fit perfectly in the Dolphins defense.

13.) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Desmond Trufant CB/Washington  Much like Jordan Poyer at the very end of the season, Trufant is soaring up draft boards. This weekend will be crucial for him if he wants to solidify himself as a first round pick. The is still no doubt in my mind the Bucs target a corner with their first selection, perhaps first two. Their secondary, to quote the infamous Bart Scott, "couldn't stop a nose bleed". And being in a division with Brees, Ryan, and Newton they need some serious help.

14.) Carolina Panthers: Johnathan Hankins DT/Ohio State  Previously, this pick was Jesse Williams. Johnathan Hankins is the same size and quite honestly dominated for the Buckeye defense. Williams was never a Terrance Cody or Marcell Dareus. Hankins was on one of if not the best defense no one talked about at Ohio State. Had the Buckeyes not been banned from postseason play, I believe the are the defending National Champs heading into next season. Hankins can play.

15.) New Orleans Saints: Johnthan Banks CB/Mississippi State  The Saints put up historically bad numbers on defense last season. Sure, you can blame it on the fact that they didn't have their regular coaching staff but at the end of the day, I see a bad defense unit. They are old, slow and struggle making big plays when they needed them. Drew Brees was the reason they even had an outside chance at the postseason. Banks is a versatile CB that will bring and edge and speed to this unit.

16.) St. Louis Rams: D.J. Fluker OT/Alabama  A good weekend will make Fluker go from a tweener to a sure thing in the first round. He can go either in the first or fall to maybe the third. Out of all the dominant players on the Alabama offensive line, one could argue Fluker was the weakest link. He has talent but is subject to injury and makes lazy penalties at times. Regardless, the Rams are in some serious need along the O-Line.

17.) Pittsburgh Steelers: Ezekiel Ansah DE/BYU  The proud franchise that is the Pittsburgh Steelers need to regain their identity on defense. The absence of Troy Polamalu for most of the season didn't help but he should be back and healthy in 2013. Same goes for James Harrison. At his best, one of the most dominating players in the NFL. A young guy in the front seven is exactly what the doctor ordered for the "Stillers" with this pick. Ansah is a hot name and will be watched very closely this weekend.

18.) Dallas Cowboys: Alex Okafor DE/Texas  America's team? No, not anymore. The Cowboys have been a disgrace to America if they think they still have that title. Tony Romo is a serviceable QB. They still need to find his replacement in this draft. However, the major area of concern is on the defense. They need to compliment DeMarcus Ware and Okafor can be that guy. The Texas team takes the Texas kid.

19.) New York Giants: Sharrif Floyd DT/Florida  The Giants showed just how difficult it is to even make it back to the playoffs this past year. Certainly, the talent is in place. Just the mental aspect of the game eluded this team all season. They need high energy and high IQ players. Floyd is the answer. Never overly dominant at Florida, Floyd always seemed to be in the right spot at the right time. He will make a big play when the situation calls for it. I am awarding my first steal of the draft to the Giants with this pick.

20.) Chicago Bears: Jonathan Cooper G/North Carolina  Once again, the Bears are in a spot where they find themselves every year. They need to find offensive linemen who can, ya know, actually play. Cooper played at UNC which may cause some comcern but he is still a very solid player. He was part of those brief good years the Tar Heels had so he gets how to win. Jay Cutler is a good QB, his O-Line just needs to treat him like one.
 

21.) Minnesota Vikings: DeAndre Hopkins WR/Clemson  The Vikings need a compliment to Percy Harvin and Adrian Peterson. Harvin does it all as a receiver and everyone knows how freakishly good AP is, but they still need some more help. CHristian Ponder was either really good or really bad last season and with more consistent play at the skill positions, this team could take the next step in the playoffs.

22.) Cincinnati Bengals: Dion Jordan DE/Oregon  The Bengals have one of the best defenses no one talks about in the NFL. You can never have enough pass rushers and that is Jordan's specialty. I have seen some mocks having Jordan in the top five but I haven't seen enough to put him there especially with the DE talent in this year's class. The Bengals could very well have the top defense for years to come in the NFL.

23.) St. Louis Rams (from WSH): Sheldon Richardson DT/Missouri  If the Rams get a player like Richardson to fall to them here at 23, it is a steal. Richardson is one of the classic high motor high intensity guys that teams love to have. However, he is a relatively unknown player and will see see his stock rise. I sense he may end up like Dontari Poe from last season. Early first round pick that really struggled because of the pressure of being an early first round pick. This spot is a better fit for Richardson.

24.) Indianapolis Colts: Manti Te'o LB/Notre Dame  Again, his fall from grace really has nothing to do with the girlfriend hoax but everything to do with his play and position premium. Unless you are getting a Patrick Willis or Luke Kuechly, drafting a middle linebacker early does not make sense. He also struggled mightily against better competition. He will need a good combine and pro day in order to put himself back in the top 20.

25.) Seattle Seahawks: Zach Ertz TE/Stanford  I still like this pick here for the Seahawks. This team really does not have many holes. Defensively, one of the best and the offense with Russell Wilson was tremendous. By adding an additional blocker and decent receiver at the TE position, the Seahawks could be a very dangerous team next season.

26.) Green Bay Packers: Xavier Rhodes CB/Florida State  It seems every year the Packers need secondary help and struggle to stay healthy. Rhodes is a fairly big CB and is a big hitter. Can improve his ball skills like every corner but still has the ability to make an impact right away. In order to get back to championship form, the Packers need to find a way to stay healthy can get contribution from all of their draft picks.

27.) Houston Texans: Jesse Williams DT/Alabama  Imagine JJ Watt playing next to a player with the power of Jesse Williams. Remember, JJ watt was the Defensive Player of the Year without him. This has potential to be a scary duo for years to come. While you could look receiver at this spot, I think the idea of getting a player like Williams to play next to JJ Watt is too good to pass up on.

28.) Denver Broncos: Jordan Poyer CB/Oregon State  Champ Bailey can't play forever. I know he is not really slowing down but at somepoint, the Broncos are going to need his replacement. Why not take advantage of him still being there to teach a young player so he can translate that to when he takes over. Not many players can be a Champ Bailey, but with proper teaching from Champ as well as coaches, Poyer has a chance fill that role.

29.) New England Patriots: Tavon Austin WR/West Virginia  I do not see any way Wes Welker resigns in New ENgland for what he will be asking for and what Belichick does with veteran players. SO with his departure comes Tavon Austin's arrival. He would be able to fill the void right away left by Welker. He certainly is not as talented yet but will get there eventually with Brady and company teaching him. The rich get richer.

30.) Atlanta Falcons: Datone Jones DE/UCLA  A hot name on the rise, Jones has ascended himself all the way into the first round in this mock. I think he will eventually climb higher after the combine and pro day but for now, I see him being the replacement for John Abraham. Sure, you can look at a TE for TOny Gonzalez but defensively this team struggled against the run. They need as many good players along the defensive line as possible.

31.) San Francisco 49ers: Kenny Vaccaro S/Texas  If the 49ers cannot resign Dashon Goldson to a long term deal, I believe they look to the draft to pick up a safety. And a good one at that. Vaccaro is really the only safety worth taking in the first round and I had him all the way in my top ten previously. This would be a steal and once again, the rich get richer.

32.) Baltimore Ravens: Alec Ogletree LB/Georgia  The Super Bowl champs find their replacement for Ray Lewis. He does not have the size of Ray Lewis but his intelligence and athleticism are comparable. In future mocks, I would not be surprised to see his name higher than it already is. He is a talented player and again the combine and his pro day will only help his stock.

33.) Jacksonville Jaguars: Arthur Brown OLB/Kansas State

34.) Kansas City Chiefs: Matt Barkley QB/USC

35.) Philadelphia Eagles: Lane Johnson OT/Oklahoma

41.) Buffalo Bills: Aaron Dobson WR/Marshall  Kind of a name out of nowhere but this guy can straight up play. He is 6'3" and can run and catch like the best of them. Not to mention he went to the same school that produced Randy Moss. I will be keeping a close eye on Dobson throughout the draft process but the more I watch the more I like. He would be a great fit for the Bills.

42.) Miami Dolphins: Robert Woods WR/USC

Tyler Bray



71.) Buffalo Bills: Tyler Bray QB/Tennessee  The 6'5" former Volunteer can spin the ball very effectively. He is not the most athletic or most efficient passer but he makes big plays when he has to. Again, my position all along is that there has never been a QB I like the Bills taking in the first 2 rounds. The only one was really Tyler Wilson and I had him going one pick beofre the Bills in round one. Is Bray the answer? I don't know but they will never know unless they try.

Mock Draft #2 - Post All-Star Games

The Super Bowl is just about a week away which will close the 2012 NFL Season. A lot of memories and craziness happened during the year. To quote the great Vince Lombardi, a lot of things made me say "What the hell is going on out here?" If you forgot anything major that happened, this is where I'll remind you. Let's start off first with the truly unbelievable return of Adrian "AD" Peterson. He defied modern science with his return from a gruesome ACL injury last Christmas Eve in Washington (Coincidence RG3 also tore his ACL on that sorry excuse of a field?). Peterson finished 9 yards short of the single season record for rushing set by Eric Dickerson. I love AD and hope he continues his fierce running style throughout the rest of his career. One of my all-time favorite players.

    There was another record breaker in the form of a wide receiver who is in reality a transformer. Calvin "Megatron" Johnson set the single season receiving record passing the G.O.A.T. Jerry Rice's mark. Although Calvin somewhat disappointed me in fantasy, he still had an unbelievable season. Three out of the five rookie QBs taken in last year's draft started their first postseason game this year and put the rest of the NFL on notice and to quote Bob Dylan "times are a changin'". RG3 and Russell Wilson went head to head in the Wild Card round and put on a show until RG got injured. Andrew Luck already looks like he has 4 or 5 SuperBowls written all over him. Few more to touch on...the emergence of Colin Kaepernick in San Fran really caught everybody by surprise. People knew he could run but his arm is as good as any QB in the NFL. Good move by Harbaugh switching to the Kaep.

Chuck Pagano and interim coach Bruce Arians

    Last but certainly not least, the way the entire nation and NFL community supported and rallied behind Colt's head coach Chuck Pagano was truly the inspiration all year for everyone. A feel good story that nearly every person in the world can relate to. Well done by everyone. Oh yeah, I forgot the now infamous "Fail Mary" play in Seattle thanks to those guys who pretended to understand football (The NFL dropped the ball with those replacements, no Shane Falco that's for sure). I hope I wasn't the only fan happy to see the gun-show Ed Hoculi back on the field.

     As far as the whole Manti Te'o thing goes...uhh...yeah just literally the most bizarre thing I really have ever heard. But if I'm going to be honest as I always am with these things, he had to have known this girl was fake. After that "emotional" win against Michigan St. (I understand he lost his grandmother that day which must have been difficult but the focus was on his girlfriend for most of the broadcast) there was never a mention of a funeral or Te'o missing any sort of time to deal with his losses. Deadspin.com did a great job reporting the different dates that were the reported death of his girlfriend as well. Regardless, something fishy was going on and Te'o simply will never look good in this situation. He will be remembered as the doofus who bought into a game of Catfish or the doofus who killed an imaginary person for personal gain. Will we ever know the truth? Most likely not. But people will always have their doubts, myself included. Truly, an unbelievable story.
   To stop boring myself and you the reader, I now present Mock Draft #2...by the way I saw the stats of page views and I was close to 200 on my first mock. Trust me, I really appreciate anyone who takes the time to read this. Thank you! Ok draft mode.

    

1.) Kansas City Chiefs: Luke Joeckel OT/Texas A&M  In my first mock of 2013 I said there was no clear cut #1 overall pick. The more and more I read and view other "expert" mocks, I continue to see Joeckel atop the board. Obviously a lot will change and new Chiefs GM John Dorsey is already on record saying they will draft the best player available. Do they view that as Joeckel or perhaps a QB? Only time will tell.
 

2.) Jacksonville Jaguars: Bjoern Werner DE/Florida State  There is too much upside here for the Jags to pass on. With new head coach Gus Bradley, the mastermind behind the best defense in the league last season in Seattle, he will need to improve this defense in order to make his team better as a whole. Werner is the first piece of that puzzle and will be a career Jaguar if they handle him the right way.

 3.) Oakland Raiders: Damontre Moore DE/Texas A&M  I moved up Moore to #3 from #19 because of, again, the upside. I previously had Werner to the Raiders but Moore is the next best DE in this draft and could wind up being the top DE. Workouts both at the combine and pro-day will ultimately determine if moore is a top 3 or top 15 pick.

4.) Philadelphia Eagles: Chance Warmack G/Alabama  After watching some highlights and looking at some stats, Warmack blew me away as the best lineman in this draft. I know I have Joeckel going #1 but that is because he is at a premium position. Chip Kelly ultimately decided to take the leap of faith and bolt for the NFL (smh as a huge Ducks fan, c'mon Chip). He will need an offensive line that is tremendous at run blocking, hence the Warmack selection. The biggest question is whether or not Michael Vick will be the QB to run that offense. If not, this pick will most likely change in the future.
 

5.) Detroit Lions: Dee Milliner CB/Alabama  The Lions really were a puzzling team this past season. Calvin Johnson had a record setting season and were an explosive offense. Their defense, which was supposed to be one of the most improved in the league, was at best mediocre. One position that has plagued this team for years has been CB or even the secondary as a whole. I think the Lions may address that in this draft heavily. They have talent and should not be picking in the top 5 much longer.
 

6.) Cleveland Browns: Barkevious Mingo OLB/DE/LSU  With Ray Horton coming in as the DC, the Browns must find good talent to fill his 3-4 system. Arizona's defense was overlooked last season after going on the awful losing streak after starting 4-0. Horton has a good football mind and can cause a lot of problems for opposing offenses. Mingo is an ideal 3-4 OLB and would fit well in Cleveland. His quickness and ability drop into coverage or put his hand down to rush also make him desirable.
 

7.) Arizona Cardinals: Eric Fisher OT/Central Michigan  The more I thought about it and after really watching a lot of highlights of the QBs in this class, it is conceivable that no QBs will be taken in the first round. Teams for sure recognize the lack of talent at the most important position this year and may wait and improve in other areas. This is the case for Arizona. Bruce Arians takes over and he will need to find his QB fast. Whoever that QB is will need to be protected and Fisher is a quality LT. The Cardinals O-Line last was bad. I mean bad.


Cordarrelle Patterson

 8.) Buffalo Bills: Cordarrelle Patterson WR/Tennessee  This is a player I think Bills fans should watch during the combine and other pre-draft events. His size (6'3" 205lbs) is what most Bills fans a clamoring for. A big, physical receiver who can just go get it. I'm really interested to see what he does at the combine. His name is shooting up boards and a lot of mocks peg Patterson at this slot. Not just Bills fans but the entire Bills organization is seeing what a young WR with size and speed can do for a team (AJ Green, Julio Jones). This pick only makes too much sense. Like I said at the Arizona pick, reaching for a QB in the 1st round will only lead to further ineptitude.

9.) New York Jets: Kenny Vaccaro S/Texas  Another name shooting up boards is Vaccaro. He comes from DB U at Texas and is a very polished player. Some fine tuning through good coaching can turn this very good player into a great player. I don't believe LaRon Landry or Yeremiah Bell will be back for the Jets next season so safety will be a major position of need. Along with QB, but that has already been discussed. It kills me to put a Longhorn on the Jets.

10.) Tennessee Titans: Star Lotulelei DT/Utah  This pick remains the same, one of two in my top 10 to stay the same. It just makes sense. No other team in the top is really desperate for a plug on the interior D-Line. Lotulelei is just that. Tennessee was no good against the run last year and need to find ways to get to the QB. Pressure up the middle will help guys like Kamerion Wimbley and Zach Brown get to the QB more often.

11.) San Diego Chargers: Justin Hunter WR/Tennessee  Two Volunteer WRs taken in the top 11 picks. How was that team not better? Anyways, the Super Chargers were decimated by injury to their WRs last season. Other than Antonio Gates, they have no true threat to go over the top to. Hunter has size but has been known to take plays off. Something worth noting during the pre-draft process.

12.) Miami Dolphins: Robert Woods WR/USC  So he goes from being a Bill and loved by Bills fans to a Dolphin and loved by no one. Woods is a supremely talented player that can help Ryan Tannehill develop into a better QB. When Brian Hartline is your number one wideout, you know it's time to upgrade. Woods will go in the top 15 in my opinion.

13.) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Johnthan Banks CB/Mississippi State  Player changes but the position stays the same. The Bucs need to add players to their secondary even if they end up being a depth player. The more they draft the better chance they have of hitting one. Banks is not the most talented CB but has decent size and has great cover skills. Something pretty much every Buccaneer did not have last year in the defensive secondary.

14.) Carolina Panthers: Jesse Williams DT/Alabama  The Panthers have a good offense with Cam Newton running the show. They still need to get over the hump defensively. Number one pick last year Luke Kuechly was a stud at middle LB for the team last season. Now they need a player to fill the middle of their defensive line. Williams doesn't have the quickness a lot of DTs possess to get off the ball but he certianly has the raw power. Rumored to be repping 600+lbs on bench. Absurd.

15.) New Orleans Saints: Jarvis Jones OLB/Georgia  There is a growing concern surrounding Jones about his longevity and ability to stay healthy. According to some NFL Scouts (info from rotoworld.com) Jones was told he should retire from football because of a chronic back problem. This could be a major red flag for arguably the best defensive player in this draft. Regardless, the Saints need a stud defender and if Jones falls to 15, this has to be his spot.

16.) St. Louis Rams: Oday Aboushi OT/Virginia  The Rams need to to find a player along the offensive line that can control the game. Aboushi has good size and can move very well. He needs to improve his overall strength but the Ram are getting a solid player. Sam Bradford has yet to make his mark on the NFL and perhaps with a solid line, he may just do that.

 17.) Pittsburgh Steelers: Manti Te'o  LB/Notre Dame  The free fall ends at this pick. Now, I didn't have Te'o falling this far simply because of the "hoax", but it was based more on seeing him play in a few games against better talent. Sure he flourished against Wake Forest and Boston College but going against other teams with better offensive players, he sometimes looked lost and was getting pushed around. Best example was against Alabama in the title game. Most of those guys are NFL ready linemen which means Te'o may not be ready just yet for the NFL. Still a quality player, just falling down a bit.

18.) Dallas Cowboys: Sam Montgomery DE/LSU  It was clear this past year that DeMarcus Ware is feeling the effects of constantly hitting offensive linemen year and year out. Normally on the field in every passing situation, there were times this past year where Ware had to take plays off. The Cowboys need to find a player that can speel Ware while not losing a beat. I'm not convinced yet Montgomery can be that player but a good combine and pro day will help his cause.

19.) New York Giants: Jordan Poyer CB/Oregon State  Although the Giants spent a first round pick 2 years ago on Prince Amukamara, they still need to find a corner who can at the very least stay healthy. It seems every year the Giants have to scramble to find healthy DBs in every game. Even if this pick is for depth, it will be worth it for Big Blue. Poyer is undersized but is still a quality player that can fill in where needed.

20.) Chicago Bears: Jonathan Cooper G/North Carolina  Once again the Bears find themselves with a mess on the offensive line. The hiring of Marc Trestman makes Jay Cutler a million times better. He worked with guys like Rich Gannon and Bernie Kosar and made them better. Cutler will get the teaching and now more time to throw with Cooper in the mix. In my opinion, he is the more athletic player compared to Chance Warmack.

21.) Minnesota Vikings: Keenan Allen WR/California  The Vikings are really one solid player away from taking the next step to becoming a great team. Adrian Peterson, for my money, is the best RB in the league. With a solid running game Christian Ponder has shown he can win games. By adding a weapon like Allen, this offense goes from ground and pound to a balanced attack which will ultimately get them more wins and a deeper playoff run.
 

22.) Cincinnati Bengals: Ezekiel Ansah DE/BYU  Ansah is a riser at this point. Once thought to be a 3rd round pick, Ansah has crept into the first round in many drafts. He went to BYU which has produced some good football players in the past. Cincinnati has an underrated defense. By adding a pure pass rusher, this defense could challenge for the top spot in the NFL next season.

23.) St. Louis Rams (from WSH): Barrett Jones C/Alabama  The Alabama product played nearly every position on the offensive line while in college and won the nation's top award for each position. That should tell you the type of player Barrett Jones is. Although he will be listed as a center in the draft, Jones can play anywhere. I think his versatility will be very appealing to NFL clubs, so he may go even higher in the first round. For now, I'll continue the trend of the Rams sticking with the offensive line picks.

24.) Indianapolis Colts: Kevin Minter LB/LSU  Like I said in my first mock, the Colts were very surprising this season. It helps to have a franchise QB but the Colts will be a dangerous team moving forward. Adding a great defender to cover the middle of the field like a Kevin Minter makes the Colts even more dangerous. Their defense was not all that bad last season but can still use an extra push to get them over the hump.

25.) Seattle Seahawks: Zach Ertz TE/Stanford  This pick goes unchanged. The only difference is Notre Dame TE Tyler Eifert is also still on the board. The main reason is because Eifert tended to struggle while in run protection. There is no question Eifert is a tremndous receiver but needs to learn to be a better blocker. Ertz is an all around good TE. Not the best prospect at the position to be in a draft but is for this season.

26.) Green Bay Packers: Desmond Trufant CB/Washington  The Packers still boast one of the best fofenses in the NFL. Discount Double Check always helps. They most likely will be letting free agent WR Greg Jennings walk so WR could be the position to target here. Offensive line is also a concern. But I went DB because the Packers seem to lose a step in the secondary every year. Charles Woodson isn't getting younger. Trufant could step in and fill a need from day one.

27.) Houston Texans: DeAndre Hopkins WR/Clemson  The Texans are not far away from being the dominant team many people believed they were this season. Andre Johnson isn't getting younger but he can still put up incredible numbers. They need another weapon on offense to help Johnson and Arian Foster. Matt schaub probably wouldn't mind a speedster either. Hopkins is a good fit for the Texans offense.

28.) Denver Broncos: Sheldon Richardson DT/Missouri  The Missouri Tiger finds a home in the middle of the Bronco defense. Peyton Manning can still play at a high level but could use more defense. Although the Broncos were a good defense this year, they're weakness was up the middle. There is no question they can rush the passer but they need a big presence in the middle. Richardson is still a name I believe can go top 15 if his workouts go well.

29.) New England Patriots: Eric Reid S/LSU  Quick name the Patriots starting safeties...yeah it is knd of difficult. Reid can step in right away for this team and make a major upgrade at this position. If Baltimore exposed anytinhg in the AFC Championship it's that the Pats secondary is very beatable. Flacco had no problem picking his spots on a consistent basis. A strong offense can only take you so far Mr. Belichick.

30.) Atlanta Falcons: Eddie Lacy RB/Alabama  The 49ers showed that the Falcons are truly a one dimensional team in the NFC Championship game. There was no run game presence what so ever in that game which led to Matt Ryan trying to prove he can win the big game. Lacy is a big time RB and will need a strong workout to prove he is worthy of a first round pick. I also believe Michael Turner's days in the ATL are numbered.
 

*31.) Baltimore Ravens: Matt Elam S/Florida  This pick remains the same from mock draft 1. Like I said there, the biggest question the Ravens will need to address is drafting Ray Lewis' replacement or Ed Reed's replacement. I choose the latter. Props to this team for riding that emotional high their inspirational leader, Ray Lewis, has given them. Awesome story and yet another remarkable playoff run. Beating Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady in one post season. Wow.

*32.) San Francisco 49ers: Johnathan Hankins DT/Ohio State  My pick to win the Super Bowl next week are these 49ers. What a job by Colin Kaepernick to get this team to the promised land. Think back to last season too, this should have been the matchup had it not been for two really boneheaded plays (Kyle Williams 2 punt reutrn fumbles, Lee Evans dropped game winning touchdown). Regardless, the champs go with beef up the middle on their defensive line with the last pick of the first round.

The jury is still out on whether or not he will be able to cut it in the NFL but I am willing to take that chance and I believe the Bills are too.

First Mock for 2013 - Post BCS

Playoff football. Only few things can rival the intensity and awesomeness it brings. It also means we are that much closer to draft day. The draft order is based on projections of playoff teams. Regardless, I could not help myself and had to start my mock draft season. Of course, the Bills are my favorite team but I will be un biased and make the selection on who I really think they will take not who I want them to take. The head coach search is over now with Doug Marrone landing the Bills job. For me, the hiring is just alright. I don't love it and I don't hate it. We will just have to wait and see what he can do as head coach. He does have an endorsement from Sean Payton so that can only be good. There are also talks he may draft Ryan Nassib, his QB from 'Cuse. With his OC from 'Cuse Nathaniel Hackett in the mix, that is an even greater possibility but may not be what I think. I also love the hiring of DC Mike Pettine. All in all, good start to 2013 for the Bills, but remember when they signed Mario last year? How did that turn out? The season is a long way away but it is a good start to this point.

1.) Kansas City Chiefs: Luke Joeckel OT/Texas A&M  New head coach Andy Reid must be thinking "What the hell did I get myself into?". This team does not have a QB, a staple for Reid's offense and has been abysmal defensively the past 2 seasons. The logical thing to do is take a QB #1 right? Wrong. This year's QB draft class is not nearly worthy of a #1 pick let alone top 10. The Chiefs need to find stability offensively and Joeckel, arguably the best player in the draft fits nicely in KC. 2.) Jacksonville Jaguars: Jarvis Jones OLB/Georgia  Another player arguably the best in this draft, Jones is comparable to Melvin Ingram from last season's draft. Ingram saw limited playing time in his rookie season in San Diego but his impact was certainly felt. The Jags do have a good front 7 on defense but could really use the pass rush specialist like an Ingram or Bruce Irvin in Seattle. 14.5 sacks in the SEC isn't too shaby and he led the nation in that category. (NFL Comparable: Melvin Ingram)

3.) Oakland Raiders: Bjoern Werner DE/Florida State  The German phenom lands in the black hole. Over the past few seasons, the Raiders have seen their first round picks turn from hope to bust in a matter of games. Werner, however, has JJ Watt like qualities. Although not as big or intimidating, Werner possesses the motor and power to collapse the pocket and force the QB to make decisions he wouldn't otherwise make. His 13.0 sacks this season were good enough for a third place tie in the entire nation. Not bad for a kid born outside the country. This is a safe pick for the Raiders, one that won't have the fans by the bay scratching their heads. (NFL Comparable: Jason Babin)

4.) Philadelphia Eagles: Eric Fisher OT/Central Michigan  Possibly a reach here, but if there is anything I have learned from doing these mocks is that NFL GMs are insane. Most of the time there is a clear cut favorite for a pick and the team takes a player no one has heard of (by no one I mean people other than me. I have no life and have seen virtually all of these players play.). Well, here is that pick. Fisher is a monster at 6'7" 305lbs and in my opinion should be a top 5 pick. The biggest knock on Fisher has nothing to do with his talent level but the fact that he played in the MAC might scare some people away. But the Eagles desperately need O-Line help. (NFL Comparable: D'Brickashaw Ferguson)

5.) Detroit Lions: Manti Te'o LB/Notre Dame  Bills fans will hate this pick. On draft day mute your TV when the commish announces Te'o to the Lions and you will here any number of expletives fly from other fans watching the draft. Te'o really does not need much descrption here. If you know and follow college football you know te'o is just an all around terrific LB and should be a star in the NFL. If he's not, thank you Lions. (NFL Comparable: London Fletcher)

6.) Cleveland Browns: Sam Montgomery DE/LSU  After not landing Chip Kelly, the Browns should move in a different direction and continue to build the defense then wait for a better QB class in years to come. Montgomery is a bit of a reach at this point but depending on his workouts could very well find himself in the top 10. Cleveland needs good players much like the Bills and Montgomery would be a start. (NFL Comparable: John Abraham)

7.) Arizona Cardinals: Geno Smith QB/West Virginia  The Cardinals have no other option with this pick. The longer they ignore this position, the further away they will be in coming close to competing in the NFL. Smith displayed flashes last season of being either a tremendous QB and at times one of the worst QBs in this draft. Arizona has to hope that Geno Smith is the answer at this position. (NFL Comparable: Cam Newton)

8.) Buffalo Bills: Robert Woods WR/USC  Though I prefer the Bills to target a guy like Dwayne Bowe in FA, this is the pick for me for now. Woods and Marquise Lee were studs for USC throughout thier careers. Woods had 76 catches last season for 846yds and 11 TDs. Not gaudy numbers but give this team another reciever to compliment Stevie Johnson might make all the difference in the world. Expecting a QB with this pick? I do not believe outside of Glennon the Bills would be interested in taking a QB this high in the draft. So instead follow the Cincinnati model of drafting the young stud wideout (ok Woods is NOT AJ Green but still a viable option) then get the QB in round 2 or 3. To me it makes sense and I am not being biased, I truly believe this is the way the Bills are leaning in the upcoming draft. (NFL Comparable: Percy Harvin)

9.) New York Jets: Mike Glennon QB/North Carolina State   Glennon is a hot name lately around draft experts. Mel Kiper of ESPN has Glennon ranked as his top QB in this class. Glennon is a true pocket passer which is still respectable around the NFL. He threw for 4,031 yds 31 TDs and 17 picks this season on a mediocre NC State team. The last time the Jets had a true pocket passer was Chad Pennington. (NFL Comparable: Tony Romo)

10.) Tennessee Titans: Star Lotulelei DT/Utah  The Titans are a team that is just kind of there. Sure they have a star at running back in CJ2K but the rest of the team, to me, is just blah. Adding this straight up dude to the middle of their defensive line could provide a spark. Although not a popular name or sexy name, Lotulelei is a beast, I'm talking Haloti Ngata type beast. His 5.0 sacks from 2012 are just part of what he is as a player. This guy can eat blocks creating opportunities for his linemates and linebackers and is actually quite quick for a man of his size 6'3" 320lbs. (NFL Comparable: Haloti Ngata)

11.) San Diego Chargers: Dee Milliner CB/Alabama  The Chargers were once again one of the biggest disappointments in the NFL in 2012. This might be the end of the line for Philip Rivers in SD so a QB could be a pick here but for now I went with the position that the Chargers desperately need fixed. Milliner is no Patrick Peterson or hell Stephon Gilmore (yeah, I went there) but he is a lot like Brandon Carr. He's got pretty good size for a CB (6'1" 198lbs.) and was a shut down corner on the most dominant defense in college football. A safe and smart pick for the Chargers. (NFL Comparable: Brandon Carr)

12.) Miami Dolphins: DeAndre Hopkins WR/Clemson  Give Tannehill someone to throw to. Brian Hartline quietly had a great season for the Phins but I suspect they are looking for the explosive play maker they havent had since the pre-holistic Ricky Williams days. Hopkins, along with every other offensive player at Clemson, has game changing speed and can hurt a team in the open field. Tannehill really wasn't all that bad last season as a rookie and nearly led his team to the playoffs. Hopkins could be the missing piece for the Dolphins to get over the hump. (NFL Comparable: Julio Jones)

13.) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jordan Poyer CB/Oregon State  Another pick much like Eric Fisher to Philly. However, Poyer is another name that is gaining a lot of momentum to the pre-draft stages. Not the biggest guy in the world (5'11" 190lbs) but can certainly pack a punch. Very physical corner that will help a secondary that got scorched last season (4,951yds 30 TDs given up). Ronde Barber is also most likely done with his career. (NFL Comparable: Adam "Pacman" Jones)

14.) Carolina Panthers: Lane Johnson OT/Oklahoma  As of today, Johnson is not a household name. But as the process goes on, I expect his name to be mentioned among the top O-Linemen in the draft. He did an admirable job at the University fo Oklahoma protecting Landry Jones and a balanced runnning game for the Sooners. The Panthers could use O-Line help for Cam Newton but I would not be surprised if this is a defensive pick here.  (NFL Comparable: Anthony Davis)

15.) New Orleans Saints: Barkevious Mingo OLB/LSU  Award for best name in the draft goes to Mingo. Montgomery's teammate at LSU now becomes division rival in the NFL but again his status to this point is up in the air. Mingo was anoth guy the scouts said had potential to be a top 5 pick. But lack of production and somewhat of a down year for the Bayou Bengals led to Mingo's descent. The Saints need help at rushing the passer as well as covering Rbs in space. Mingo has the size and speed necessary to do so. 4.0 sacks in the SEC is nothing to shake your head at. (NFL Comparable: Aldon Smith)

16.) St. Louis Rams: D.J. Fluker OT/Alabama The Rams seemingly had the most turbulent season in terms of ups and downs this year unlike any other. At one point you could argue they were playoff contenders at others they were borderline unwatchable. With that said they do have a pretty good team in the Louie. An improved offensive line still needs to be addressed to get Sam Bradford over the hump. Watch for the Rams to use both 1st rounds picks this year on the O-Line. (NFL Comparable: Nate Solder)

17.) Pittsburgh Steelers: Eddie Lacy RB/Alabama  Reach? Yes. Worth it? We'll see. He is not Trent Richardson or even Mark Ingram, but Lacy follows in the footsteps of 2 great Alabama running backs. I believe Rashard Mendenhall is done in Pittsburgh and this team needs to get back to ground and pound and Lacy is just that. At 5'10" 220lbs, Lacy brings it on every play. The Steelers improved the offensive line last season through the draft, now they just need a runner to utilize it. (NFL Comparable: Marshawn Lynch)

18.) Dallas Cowboys: Damontre Moore DE/Texas A&M  The second Aggie to be taken off the board is yet another name the is gaining traction. Moore was relatively unknown to begin the season but had a breakout year for the Aggies. His 12.5 sacks this past season was a +4 from his 8.5 last season. With DeMarcus Ware's recent injury problems, the Cowboys could use an extra man on the defense so they don't lose a beat when Ware needs a rest. (NFL Comparable: Robert Mathis)

19.) New York Giants: Alex Ogletree LB/Georgia  Ogletree does not have the greatest build of a linebacker but he certainly has the instincts of one. He has tremendous speed for a linebacker which gives him an edge against the run. The Giants lack a presence in the middle of their defense that can lead them back to their dominance. LSU's Kevin Minter could be an option here but I personally believe Ogletree is the better player. (NFL Comparable: Paul Poszlusny)

20.) Chicago Bears: Tyler Eifert TE/Notre Dame  The second Golden Domer to come off the board goes to DAAAA Bears. Eifert was the leading reciever for the Irish this past season with 44 catches for 624yds and 4 TDs. At times Eifert can dominate the game with his ability to stretch the field or catch the short to intermediate passes necessary for a first down. He is a reliable target that should help in the run game as well in Chicago. (NFL Comparable: Jason Witten)

21.) Minnesota Vikings: Dion Jordan DE/Oregon  The 6'6" 243lbs product is a very fast player. By that I mean he gets off the ball and can beat his man to get to the QB with relative ease. With that said, he doesn't have the signature most DEs in the NFL tend to have. He needs to improve his ability to bull rush as well. But having a teacher like Jared Allen will certainly help. Jordan is another one of those risers on the board during pre-draft analysis. This may be a little high but for now, I'm sticking with this pick. (NFL Comparable: Charles Johnson)

22.) Cincinnati Bengals: Arthur Brown OLB/Kansas State  The Bengals quietly boast one of the best defenses in the NFL. While RB is a deifnite option at this spot, that position is no longer a major position of need in the NFL. Offensively this team has their franchise QB and WR in place. At some point I do expect the Bengals to take their franchise RB but for now, Brown is a strong candidate for the Bengals. (NFL Comparable: Bart Scott)

23.) St. Louis Rams (from WSH): Chance Warmack G/Alabama  Like I said at pick 16, the Rams are taking a page out of the 49ers book and spending 2 first round picks on offensive lineman. Warmack is a stud. He might be the best offensive lineman in the draft but plays at a position that is not considered premium. He literally can take on 2 rushers at once and is a punisher in the run game. Great speed and ability to get out in space to block downfield for screens or toss plays. (NFL Comparable: Logan Mankins)

24.) Indianapolis Colts: Johnthan Banks CB/Mississippi State  The surprise team in the NFL this despite having the second coming of Peyton Manning (really how lucky are the Colts? Must be why their logo is a horseshoe). Offensively, this team is a good run game away from being dominant. Defensively, need improvement. Their secondary was not terrible but it could still use at least one guy who can shut downthe other team's top reciever. Banks can do just that after lighting up the SEC this year. (NFL Comparable: Carlos Rogers)

*25.) Baltimore Ravens: Matt Elam S/Florida  To draft Ray Lewis' replacement or Ed Reed's replacement? That will be the number 1 question for the Ravens this offseason. Ray Lewis is of course retiring whenever Baltimore's season ends. Ed Reed is not far behind. Elam is a ferocious hitter and will fit in with the Ravens defense. He does however need to improve overall on his tackling. He tends to go for the big hit too often which will not survive in the NFL. (NFL Comparable: Earl Thomas)

*26.) San Francisco 49ers: Sheldon Richardson DT/Missouri  The age and injury history of Justin Smith should be a concern for the 49ers. The really do not have much depth on the defensive line and could use another big guy to make a difference. Richardson is relatively unknown at this point but I believe will end up being a top 15 pick. He doesn't have ideal nose tackle size (6'3" 295lbs) but his lateral movement and quickness off the snap make him an appealing prospect. (NFL Comparable: Kyle Williams)

*27.) Houston Texans: Justin Hunter WR/Tennessee  At one point during the season, Hunter was regarded as the top WR in this draft. But after some injuries and poor production this season, his stock has dropped. With that said the 6'4" 200lbs Volunteer could be exactly what the Texans need to really be the dominant offense most believed they were. Adding his 73 catches and 9 TDs from a one year ago at Tennessee could make the Texans once again the favorite to win it all. (NFL Comparable: Vincent Jackson)

*28.) Atlanta Falcons: Andre Ellington RB/Clemson  Another Clemson Tiger off the board in round 1. Ellington is no where near the talent of CJ Spiller but he certainly has that game changing ability. Michael Turner lost a lot of his touches to Jacquizz Rodgers this past season but Rodgers is not a number 1 back. Ellington very weel could be a number one with his gaudy numbers he put up as a Tiger (1,081yds 5.1/att 8 TDs, 232yds receiving 16.1/att 1 TD). (NFL Comparable: DeAngelo Williams)

*29.) Seattle Seahawks: Zach Ertz TE/Stanford  The unorthodox Pete Carroll picks continue. Ertz is not far behind in terms of his ability to pick up first downs and stretch the field much like Chicago Bears first round pick Tyler Eifert. He had an impressive season with the Cardinal hauling in 69 catches for nearly 1,000 yds with 6 TDs. Russell Wilson was incredible this year as a third round rookie. Giving him a security blanket like Ertz may very well vault the team form the Pacific northwest to the SuperBowl next season. (NFL Comparable: Jermaine Gresham)

*30.) New England Patriots: Jesse Williams DT/Alabama  Wes Welker may very well be done with the Pats so WR could be a logical option here for Bill Belichick. But I will hold out on WR for now and go with a pick that will be sure to be Vince Wilfork's replacement. Williams is not as dominant as Marcel Dareus was for Bama but he certainly has this skills to succeed at the next level. Any player coached by Nick Saban is pretty close to as safe a pick there is in the NFL. Plus, Belichick also tapped into Bama's talent pool selecting Dont'a Hightower in the 1st round last season. *31.) Green Bay Packers: Barrett Jones C/Alabama  Back to back Crimson Tide players off the board at the end of the first round. Jones is no doubt the top center in this draft but is the first round too early to take one? I think so but the Pack desperately need to fill that position. Jeff Saturday was a disappointment after signing as a fee agent. Not only does Jones provide stability and serve as the signal caller for the O-Line, he brings tremendous leadership and a winning attitude from his days at Alabama. Smart, safe pick for the Packers. (NFL Comparable: Max Unger)

*32.) Denver Broncos: Alex Okafor DE/Texas  The rich get richer. Already boasting two of the NFL's top pass rushers in Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller, the Broncos get the purest pass rusher in this draft in Okafor. Now I could be speaking biased here as a true Horns fan but Okafor seemed to be in on every play this year for Texas. He causes so many problems both in the run and pass game but his true instinct is to get after the passer. With 12.5 sacks this year, Okafor was by far the best player for the Longhorns this season. (NFL Comparable: Cameron Wake)

41.) Buffalo Bills: Tyler Wilson QB/Arkansas  Well people reading this, here it is the Bills new franchise QB, or so we hope. Initially, I never liked the idea of Wilson being drafted here. But I watched some games and highlights and he certainly has the arm strength mobility and accuracy to play QB in the NFL. The major reason he fell off as a top 10 pick this year was that his team was awful this season. Can you blame him though? His coach was fired and his top RB and recievers were injured. Despite that Wilson still threw for 3,387yds 21 TDs and 13 picks. Compare that to his 2011 season where he threw for 3,638yds 24 TDs and just 6 picks. He has the talent but he needs to cut down on his mistakes and read defenses better. With good coaching he very well could do just that.
